Hello Salem,
Time sure does fly! Since being elected as your Mayor, I’ve been on a journey of learning and growing in this new role. Just as I believe in staying open to new experiences, I’m embracing the opportunity to learn everything I can about leading Oregon’s second-largest city. There’s a lot to take in—processes, people, plans, and potential—but I’m ready for the challenge. Together, I know we can bring hope to Salem for today and tomorrow.
My focus remains on building good relationships with our city council members and creating a positive, productive environment where we can all thrive. We’ve got work to do, progress to make, and people to serve, and I’m grateful to be part of this journey with you.
On Budget Reform:
Since May, I’ve been working hard to ensure that Salem’s financial decisions are transparent and efficient. I’ve pushed for City Staff to provide quarterly reports on the General Fund, which will help us stay informed and accountable as we work toward budget reforms that best serve our community. By addressing our city’s financial health today, we’re laying the foundation for a brighter tomorrow.
On Addressing Homelessness:
I’ve had ongoing conversations with both law enforcement and our residents about the impacts of homelessness on our city, including related challenges like sidewalk obstructions and camping. These issues are complex, and I’m committed to finding sustainable solutions that will support all members of our community. I truly believe that with compassion and diligence, we can create hope and positive change that lasts.
On Public Safety:
Public safety remains a top priority. My role on the Marion County Public Safety Coordinating Council allows me to foster strong partnerships with county officials, ensuring we work together to create a safer Salem. I also recently participated in selecting our new Fire Chief, David Gerboth, whose leadership will be invaluable as we address our city’s needs. This is all part of my commitment to fostering a safer today and a more secure tomorrow.
On September 25th, I spoke at the Joint Committee on Transportation, advocating for increased resources to maintain and improve Salem’s roads. And on a personal note, I was so proud to cheer on my husband, Roger, as he completed his Ironman race here in Salem—what an experience!
I’ve been out and about attending community events like Hoopla!, the Feria del Libro Book Fair, and Theater Under the Stars. I’m always inspired to see so many people working together to make our city vibrant and inclusive. I’ve also had the pleasure of supporting local charitable organizations that make a difference, like the YMCA, Bridgeway Recovery, Habitat for Humanity, and many others through auctions, golf tournaments, luncheons, and evening events.
Balancing all this with being a mom, wife, grandma, boss, and friend keeps me grounded and grateful. I am committed to being a source of hope for Salem today, and I’m excited about all we can achieve together for tomorrow. Thank you for your continued support, and stay tuned for more updates!
With warm regards,
Julie Hoy
Mayor-Elect of Salem
